The 2010 Presidential election is fast approaching. Yet, like the unending troubles that are happening in our society, the issue regarding the automation of this incoming election is not yet perfectly settled. Though our government thrust effort to realize this project and do it smoothly, there are still lot of doubts and fears raised by those concerned citizens. Yes, we concede to the fact, that our government, especially COMELEC, exerted effort for this project. However, the issue is, "Is their effort enough?" As what we had learned from the news that the COMELEC postponed and move dates regarding on this automated election for they do have a short time frame to settle all those things. And to have a wider view about this, let me enumerate some issues on this computer- based election.
Late Approval
The 2010 automation project was stranded in the middle of the highway. Why? As Dick Gordon stated on an interview, the said proposal was then approved late by the legislative department! As a result, the COMELEC had a shorter time to organize every detail of the automation and giving way for more complications.
Technicalities
The Smartmatics, Corp., as the official partner of our government, will be held responsible for the system of the election and as well the computers needed. Yet, there was another issue that the computers required for the aitomated election will not be produced in the time it will be needed.
Voters and Teachers Education
As usual, our dear teachers will then be the "angels of our ballot" during this 2010 election. Yet, there where not enough timefor them to be trained on how to handle all those computer stuffs. As what the leader of the national federation for teachers had said that they need more time for their trainings, however, the COMELEC denied them the chance for lack of time. As a result, their would be no formal educatrion for all the voters on how to do this computer- based election.
Credibility
Lastly, the credibility of the government, specifically COMELEC, to hold this election is being questioned. Juan dela Cruz, our dear Filipino compatriot, don't want to hear another "I am sorry" story.
I am not prognosticating negative results nor underestimating the capabilty of our government. My point is, "Is it the right time?" If it is, then we should be bold enough to make a difference. Do what you preach....... Ako ang Simula! Ito ang Simula ng Pagbabago!

Nice one July!!
ReplyDeleteI really agree with you that the preparations for this coming 2010 election is quite a alarming already and the government should take actions. COMELEC should be more responsible.
Very good choice of topic and based on your writing you really know what you're talking about.
GOD BLESS<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
whether I like it or not, I have to make myself involve to the upcoming 2010 elections since this is my beloved country even though I can't vote yet. But with that modernized way of voting,I just hope that it will work and no more "behind the scene" acts.
ReplyDeletegreat work!
I think what the government lack the most and why still the word "corruption" still exist is that they, the government in general, has no "transparency". This is why we can't see how everything they do is done. Anyway, the collective voice of "change" of our country's people are now being emphasized, mostly by the youth, and if...if we really want to change the indescent course of our country, not only the youth should do what they can. "Everyone" should get involved. Those who are in position right now, since they have more influencial means to make the people "move", should also try their best to live their honor (or yet atleast to regain some of it). We are not deaf and we are not blind and most importantly we are aware that this is for the future, this is for us, Filipinos. Let's do our individual or collective various initiatives not only for this coming election but also for the preparations until this day comes.
ReplyDeleteseems your a kapamilya dude! haha!well very nice that you write about this. surely hackers are planning now different strategies how to manipulate an automated election..haha.
ReplyDeleteYou know, I don't read too much your write up 'cos I already know that it's good !
ReplyDeleteBut I still got your thought !
I salute you !
Hope you comment on mine too !
Hehehe !
Nice blog topic Bern. yeah you're right the filipino citizens don't want to hear another I am Sorry story. And I wonder why, why is it that the Comelec didn't hear the voice of the teachers saying " We should be trained now" since the 2010 election is pass approaching.
ReplyDeleteI think the Philippines is not yet ready for the automated election, since as what I have observed there's always problem regarding this automated election. In the production of machines that will be used for the election, the training time of the teachers, the knowledge of the voters, the printing of the ballot papers, etc.
ReplyDeleteInteresting post! I enjoyed reading it and I like the way you right. I'm just hope for a clean and safe election this 2010. Anyway, I've been looking for interesting topic as this. Looking forward for your next post!.

Which is much more safer? the automated or the (tinamban) voting (I can't remember the term sorry)? How I wish this coming election there's no cheating. Well, even if the government always say that the votes will be safe, they are not worth of our trust, still, cheating is prevailing. I don't really trust the automated voting, it's a computer, if there's a computer there's a hack. I really like your topic. (:P).

ReplyDeleteyeah, such a nice and interesting topic! tnx for giving me an idea on how to do my blog well...,
ReplyDeleteanyways...., instead of many hesitations, much better if we will just support the plans and decisions of the heads. let's try to look on the positive sides. why not try this, we all know that we are left behind by the other countries when it comes to automated election.whether we like it or not cheating is everywhere, even if what kind of machines or styles of election we will be using its still useless if the manipulator is a big cheater.
so let's be prepare and support our upcoming election...,
let's pray that it will be a PEACEFUL ELECTION!!!
MORE POWERS AND GLORY TO GOD!!!
i am happy to know that there are a lot of people who are getting involved in this 2010 Automated Elections -especially the young ones. Let us help fellow voters, let's help in education one another. http://digsmydailythoughts.blogspot.com/2010/03/voters-education.html
